Ann Coulter says single mothers are killing society

And I say she’s crazy, especially when every single mother I know is working herself to the bone to raise good and productive citizens (for example, my friend from grammar school who recently adopted a beautiful 3-year-old girl, a former victim of domestic abuse).

I’m not big on FOX-News, but when I heard that Bill O’Reilly would interview actress and single mother Janine Turner for her take on Coulter’s comments, I DVR’d the segment.

O’Reilly opens with Coulter’s skirmish with the women of The View. For the first time in my life, I’m with Hasselbeck.

Single moms need a safe-haven, too

Single mother Lavinia Cooper was one of dozens of parents that dropped their child off at a Nebraska hospital under the states old Safe Haven Law.  The law was orinigally created to allow parents to turn over babies they couldn’t care for, but lawmakers couldn’t decide on the age limit, so it became a free-for-all for parents with kids up to 18 years old.  According to a 20/20 report that aired on Friday, November 21, Lavinia’s eight-year old bipolar son was a danger to himself and others.  She showed the makeshift nail ridden club he made as a weapon.

Raising children is far from easy. Take away a functional two-parent household, add a mental illness or handicap, it gets umpteenth times harder.

Sometimes, the most intelligent thing we can do is to admit we don’t know and ask for help.

We know single motherhood has more than its fair share of challenges.  That’s why Single Women Rule will be bringing you a special column by single moms discussing challenges and presenting solutions for issues that single moms face.  Send your suggestions to info(at)singlewomenrule.com.
